Japan Meiji era (1868-1911) $450.00 A silk Buddhist temple cloth featuring a phoenix and camellias. The technique is the labourious "tsume tsuzure" (tapestry). Very good condition, with slight staining and several tiny holes. 27" width x 20" height. In Japan, as earlier in China, the mythical Phoenix was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularly the empress. This mythical bird represents fire, the sun, justice, obedience, fidelity, and the southern star constellations.
